Schedule Fitness Breaks
I know the feeling well.
You have just finished a long day of work and you are exhausted.
You leave work and head to your car, the whole way dealing
with an inner dialogue, an argument really, between your inner angel and
devil.
The “healthy glowing workout angel” urges you to head to the
gym to get your 60 minutes in. She tells
you in her somewhat annoyingly perfect voice that you know you will feel better
afterwards. Yet just as loudly you can hear the “tired Netflix
binge watching couch potato devil” telling you to just go home and alleviate
the awful pounding in your head and burning behind your eyes; her voice is
seductive as she points out all that you have already done today and how much
you deserve a night lounging on your comfy couch.
Trust me when I say, I know which of these arguments is
going to win out 75% of the time. Maybe
you find yourself promising that inner angel voice that you will just rest for
a bit, have a quick snack and then you will go for that run. It is really hard after a long day of work to
find the time and energy to go fit in your workout, even when you know that you
will feel better afterwards.
This is where the Esprit de She Be Your Potential week 5 Challenge
can save the day.
Did you know that research shows that completing three 10-minute
workouts is just as effective, if not more, as working out for 30 minutes straight? Now you may not become an Olympian athlete
with this model, but you most certainly can improve some very important health
numbers including cholesterol, blood pressure and overall weight.
Check out this NY Times article that shares several studies
conducted about the effectiveness of mini-workouts.
The fact is, working any movement into your day will give
you more energy and help you stay focused.
- Find a 10-minute office workout video on You Tube (or use this Ultimate Office Workout by Glamour Magazine), shut your office door and feel the energy coursing through your veins and the stress melting away.
- Keep an extra pair of tennis shoes under your desk and take 10 minutes to head outside after lunch for a brisk walk around the building. Soak up some Vitamin D from the sunshine and reinvigorate yourself.
- Grab a work-friend, you know the one you usually meet at the water cooler to exchange gossip with, and do 10-minutes of partner exerciseswith resistance bands in an unused conference room before you head home for the day.
You will be amazed at how this breaks up your day, reinvigorates
you, keeps that afternoon slump at bay and helps you stay focused. Your productivity will soar and you can kick
that guilt to the curb as you pull into your driveway after a long day of
work. Although, you just may find that
after taking mini fitness breaks throughout your day you have more energy to
head to the gym after work… a win-win!
