Yes, it was for Valentine’s Day, but if
you are looking for a great way to spend the day with a loved one, whether a
significant other, friend or child, here
is a fresh and fun approach to enjoying the day together any time of year.
The How To Guide:
·
My husband and I each got five post-it
notes.
·
On each post-it we wrote an activity idea – we
agreed that four out of our five ideas had to be relatively cheap or free. This was great because we each picked things
that we enjoy while still trying to think of what the other might appreciate
and ended up with activities that were outside of our normal day.
·
We then progressed through our day by taking
turns picking out the next post-it note (i.e. activity) from an envelope. It was completely random and each part of the
day was a wonderful surprise!
Note: We did have extra slips that were specific to meals – we decided in
advance that I would come up with a breakfast idea and he would come up with
lunch and dinner ideas. We kept these
cards separate, labeled the outside appropriately and opened them when we got
hungry.
How our day went:
- · We started with a homemade breakfast that we made together and ate in front of the fireplace. (My idea/ Free)
- · We then went to a gentle yoga class together. (My idea/ $20)
- · Next, we tried a new cafĂ© for lunch that we have both been mentioning but haven’t had a chance to try yet. (His idea/ $22)
- · Then we headed over to another coffee shop that had just opened and received excellent reviews. Once again we had both mentioned wanting to try this place, but hadn’t found the time. We hung out and just talked while drinking our latte and tea. (My idea/ $8)
- · We then bundled up (it was quite chilly) and took a walk around the lake by our house. (His idea/free)
- We then headed to the movie theater to watch a new flick (neither of us ended up loving the movie, but it was great to just enjoy some mindless entertainment for a while). (We both put this one on a sticky note!/ We had a buy one get one coupon - $14)
- · Then we had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants downtown where we split a Southern favorite, Chicken & Waffles (a rare treat for us) and a delicious salad. (His idea/ $27)
- · Finally, we ended our night by heading home, starting the fireplace up, lighting a few candles and exchanging massages (His idea … I know, brownie points for him/ Free)
It was such an amazing day!
We were engaged and excited as we moved through the day because we were
continually being surprised by the other.
It was as if each of us had created an elaborate and thoughtful plan for
the other and we both spent the day feeling incredibly loved.
Nothing better than that!
We didn’t have time to get to all of our ideas. Unfortunately, we had to skip bowling, a trip
to the rock climbing gym and the barcade.
However, we have saved these idea slips and they are now sitting in a
permanent Idea Jar on top of our refrigerator.
- · Create an even larger selection of ideas. Pull out one activity a week for a surprise date night. You can create 52 different idea cards so that you have a fresh new date for every week of the year!
- · Make a jar of activity ideas for you and your child, girl’s night or a monthly get together with colleagues.
